Scripture/Bible: "Think not that I
have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them
but to fulfil them. 18 For truly, I say to you,
till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law
until all is accomplished. 19 Whoever then relaxes one
of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in
the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called
great in the kingdom of heaven. Matt
5:17-19
Reflection: what to do with old traumatic memories? Should we
try and forget?
Our
past can often be that accursed situation in our life worth forgetting about
and yet these memories keep coming up in some way or the other and we are not able to bear up with it. It can introduce in us a certain element of
irritation too.
Likewise
the law and the prophets which are the things of the past except that it was
meant to be a blessing but many a time could act as a curse in our lives, even reminding us of the guilt of our sins.
The
laws of God remind us of our true worth before God and in our own eyes and the
eyes of one another. Our conscience is
not always a criterion to judge what is right and wrong. If it was so then each
individual in this world would not argue contrary over issues of morality.
A
whole nation may feel nothing about killing the unborn or the church with its
objective law on killing may yet locally be silent in some measure or the other
over issues concerning sin and morality and may be more concerned about
societal sins and institutional sins rather than personal sins.
Such
is the gravity of the situation often leading to indifference because of the pain to live
by the conscience. In order to assuage our consciences we begin to justify and
openly profess with collective conscience as support base.
In
such a situation, Jesus who came to reduce the eternal pain of such a
conscience, by offering us grace in his salvific plan, asserts that the law and
the prophets are still valid and in no way to be reduced. They still are the pure norm by which God
will judge the world but to those who come to him he offers the hope of
salvation and grace to walk in his perfect way; a way more perfect than the
law.
Prayer: “Blessed
is the man who walks not in the counsel of
the wicked, nor stands in the way of
sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the
Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. Ps 1:1-2
