Unity in Marriage

Today’s Gospel Text:  And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" 4 He answered, "Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." 7 They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?" 8 He said to them, "For your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another, commits adultery."
10 The disciples said to him, "If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry." 11 But he said to them, "Not all men can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it." Matt 19:3-12

Reflection: The many complications faced in married life is sometimes difficult to fully comprehend.

Living one’s vocation to marriage is sometimes an uphill task.

When it comes to the difficulties faced by husband and wife we do not know in which direction the balance is tilted, who faces more of the brunt.

But in all probability it should be the weaker sex who must be facing the most as corruption hits the powerful more than the weaker.  So the male as head of the family and on account of the power he wields may tend to corrupt it.

Similarly, the woman too may carry her own seductive power or her subtle domination over her husband to corrupt a situation and bring ruin to the institution of marriage.

There are sometimes irreconcilable differences between husband and wife, when those who once affirmed that they can’t do without each other now wow that they can very well do without each other.

The bitterness and the souring of the relationship has already reached its zenith and there seem to be no way out, other than a divorce.

In this great conflict between the spouses, the message of Jesus speaks to us loud and clear:

"Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." (vss. 4-6)

Too difficult to practice in situations when there are severe irreconcilable differences and any move that goes against the will of God amounts to a failure not just on the part of the couples and their family but also of the whole church, even if it be legitimized, sometimes, in the garb of annulments.

If there is one primary assertion that I would make is this: Do the couple believe, before they come to get married and in their course of their married life, that it is God who has put them together and let no man put them asunder?

The matter doesn’t end there but it could be the beginning of a decision to live with the living God as the center of one’s married life, seeking to please him rather than pleasing themselves.

Prayer: Lord bless all those couples united in matrimony that they may realize that their unity comes from you and they have no right to seek division.

Please God

Today’s Gospel Text: And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Hero'di-ans, to entrap him in his talk. 14 And they came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? 15 Should we pay them, or should we not?" But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why put me to the test? Bring me a coin, and let me look at it." 16 And they brought one. And he said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said to him, "Caesar's." 17 Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at him. Mark 12:13-17

Reflection: The wickedness of men is not in asking a question or clarification but the plans that they make to entrap their enemy.

Many a times, who is their enemy? Not the ones who have harmed them or done anything evil to them but the ones who love them and are concerned about their welfare, not only for this life but for all eternity.

Thus we have in the history the death of the many martyrs for Christ Jesus, whose only aim in life was to reach out to the people with the Gospel of love and life: a gospel that would transform them and lead them to the eternal doors of life.

Why then did the once in authority have to send some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to entrap Jesus?

Their question seemed so simple and straight and yet much loaded but hidden behind was the motive of entrapment.

Their flattery, or as interpersonal skill experts would recommend, contained an abundant dose of positive stroke so that the lethal weapon of entrapment may be swallowed without any suspicion.

What is evident from their flattery is that they had a clear idea of the truth of Jesus; an apt description of Jesus:

“We know that you are true, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men, but truly teach the way of God.” (vs. 14)

From this description we come to know the prime criteria to be a great servant of God; Not pleasers of men or their positions, not being false and uttering falsity all the time and truly teaching the way of God.

St. Paul, one of the greatest followers of Jesus has the same to say about himself and thus we know the reason for his greatness:

“Am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still pleasing men, I should not be a servant of Christ.” Gal 1:10

And likewise are his prayers for the neo-Christians: “to lead a life worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. Col 1:10

Prayer:  May my life and meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord. (cfr.Ps 104:34)

Speak Lord

Today’s Gospel Text: "But woe to you Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! for you love the best seat in the synagogues and salutations in the market places. 44 Woe to you! for you are like graves which are not seen, and men walk over them without knowing it." 45 One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, in saying this you reproach us also." 46 And he said, "Woe to you lawyers also! for you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. Luke 11:42-46

Reflection:  Jesus; the prince of peace!

How far is it true? Here you find him in battle mode, opening up battle fronts, firing in all directions, including the ones who are ready to make peace with him and wanting him to spare them.

I can’t imagine the guts of the man, who after having fired the Pharisee, who were a majority community, he then goes around firing the lawyers.

What will our experts say? I am sure they will have an advice for the poor Christian who are seeking to walk in the footsteps of Jesus; “please don’t go about firing on all fronts”

If not then our own instincts will advice us not to fire on all fronts, no matter how right one may be.

To humans even otherwise it is a matter of great difficulty to endure the pain of rejection from all fronts. Very rarely we could have people who could even endure the laughter and mockery of their companions in order to ask a question or demand a right.

Peace solidly exists in truth and if achieved through any other means then it will fade, even gradually into oblivion.

Jesus’ action is an action of peace. We cannot have peace in hypocrisy, sin and by hiding behind masks of corruption, injustice and wrongdoing.

Nor can we have peace in working in these areas by human efforts without the help of God's grace and wisdom.

We need to allow Christ Jesus to speak to our hearts, just as he spoke to the Pharisees and lawyers and sometimes even strongly to our dead consciences in order that he may make it alive.

Adopt a spirituality in which there is room not just for Christ, but one in which there is room for Christ to speak to our conscience.

Prayer: Lord, help me I pray that I may always allow you to speak to my dead conscience and be obedient to your working.

Entrapped by Evil

Scripture/Bible:   And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Hero'di-ans, to entrap him in his talk.

Reflection: What if someone came to you with deception writ large on the face and you knew for sure the motive behind the talk sweet approach?

I am sure many of you would be angry and fume over the whole thing. If you had the strength to fight it out and there were no legal obstacles, then you would use all in your capacity to beat the person black and blue or expose the person to public disgrace and shame.

We find a similar situation in the Gospel, when these Pharisees and the Herodians come to Jesus to entrap him. Jesus knows their motives, even as they sweet talk in order to tell Jesus his true qualities.

How can entrapped creatures seek to trap a person who is free?

Jesus is quite calm about the storm that these men want to brew. He listens to their query and sees that they know the truth of life and the truth about him and instead of seeking to follow him, which should have been their first priority; they still seek to entrap him.

Here is clear case of humans knowing the truth and yet not adhering to it; if Jesus was a teacher, who according them: “was true, and cared for no man; did not regard the position of men, but truly taught the way of God.” then they should have wholeheartedly followed him.

Why do human inspite of knowing the truth, even in their inner conscience still follow a lie? But the fact remains and it is true in all our history, that there are quite many who knowing the truth walk not in it.

The many among the Christians, who are supposed to be the light to the world, could be the first who are in this category and they are instruments of leading others also astray either by not knowing their faith or by knowing their faith, like these men in the Gospel. These do not want to stand for the truth lest they displease their superiors. .

Prayer: “I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep thy word. I do not turn aside from thy ordinances, for thou hast taught me. Through thy precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.”  Ps 119:101-102,104
