Today’s Gospel Text: On
another sabbath, when he entered the synagogue and taught, a man was there
whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the
Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the sabbath, so that
they might find an accusation against him. 8 But
he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand,
"Come and stand here." And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them,
"I ask you, is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save
life or to destroy it?" 10 And he looked around on
them all, and said to him, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so,
and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with
fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus. Luke 6:6-11
Reflection: The
law seems to be weighed heavily against man. You
can’t believe it, then look at the way people justify their action against the
injunctions of the law.
The
feminist would want the freedom of choice, the youth would want the freedom to do what they want, the gay and the lesbian would want their share of freedom too.
When
the law says that an action is wrong, then there are those who claim that there
are no rights and wrongs in life.
The
modern day youth prefer to be guided by their instincts and pleasure seeking
lifestyle, rather than submit to the ethics of life.
Hence
you have a growing trend in abortions, gay marriages, right for euthanasia, the
empty churches on Sabbath, the growing trend in pre-marital sexual encounters,
the intolerance of the senior citizens, the growing tolerance of sin and
wrongdoing and the intolerance of truth, the rejection of
religion, etc., etc.,
Why
do people demand freedom to choose and that too make a choice for what is evil and
wrong? On the other hand there are these who will always have a counter argument that
what you see is your perspective and that there is nothing wrong in what they are
doing.
If
only this question is looked the other way; why do people look at the law and
its demand as evil and seek always to justify their rebellious actions which
are contrary to the law?
When
a similar hostility arose about the misunderstood concept of the law,
Jesus clarifies the truth of the law: "I
ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or
to destroy it?"
In other words, the law is good and does good, it saves life and does not destroy it.
Prayer: Lord,
may I know and understand your wisdom and walk in the light of your law.
