Today’s Gospel Text: In the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the
beginning with God; 3 all things were made through
him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life,
and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God,
whose name was John. 7 He came for testimony, to bear
witness to the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the
light, but came to bear witness to the light. 9 The true light that enlightens
every man was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the
world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. 11 He came to his
own home, and his own people received him not. 12 But to all who received him,
who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; 13 who were born,
not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word
became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his
glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. 15 (John bore witness to him, and
cried, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before
me, for he was before me.'") 16 And from his fulness have we
all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through
Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the
only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known. John 1:1-18
Reflection: Is
the world so bad that it requires someone to be exclusively born in this world, only to bear
witness to the light?
Isn't light a powerful tool in itself that is able to bear witness of itself or
rather requires no witness in its manifestation?
In fact every dark secrets and hidden objects are made manifest by light. Hence
what witness does light require that it should be made known to us.
The
gospel statement first of all clearly means that we are blind to the TRUE LIGHT or
are not able to recognize the light or that the light we see is not really
light even though the whole world agrees, with their scientific abilities, that
something is to be called light, yet it cannot be called light? (we are talking here about light and yet not about light in the sense we see light as light)
In other
words, humans are in serious trouble, how can we ever live without light and
that too all our life we have come to believe that the light that we are living
in is the true light that is sustaining us.
We
better pull up our socks and be ready to listen to what the witness has to say
and the direction he is leading humanity into.
What
is worse, the scripture tells us that by nature (sinful) we choose darkness
rather than light. (like nocturnal creatures, but that would be natural, but
what do we say about a person who prefers to be in a dark room always on
account of mental depression) (cfr. Jn. 3:19)
What
is more, the scripture passage also reveals to us that the light is meek but powerful while the darkness is active and yet never a winner against the light.
The
witness to the light reveals to us that this light is Jesus Christ. He was made fully
and completely manifest high on the cross for us, so that believing in his name
we may walk in the light as he is.
Prayer: Lord
Jesus, you are light of the world, let me walk in your revealed light that I
may never walk in the stumbling darkness.
