Scripture: In these days he went out to the mountain to pray; and all night
he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, he
called his disciples, and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles. Luke
6:12-13
Reflection: The rest is
history. If Jesus the sinless one, the anointed messiah, the son of God, needed
to pray then how much more we who are sinners need to pray. If he the master
did it then we who are followers are called to walk in his footsteps.
There are two categories
of prayers:
1) Intense (having a fixed
time and a fixed place or also called Personal prayer)
2) Fluid (flows from a
self that is in constant union with God or also called the contemplative)
From intensity flows the
fluid prayer. Unless we have a time of intense prayer, with his word to help us
stay on course, we cannot be contemplating God and seeking his will in
everything we do nor will we be doing things as God desires. “Apart from me you
can do nothing” (Jn.15:5)
The disciples continued in
the same tradition of Jesus by spending not just a night but ten days as they
waited for the birth of the church at Pentecost.
All great actions of God have
been a fruit of intense prayer on the part of his subjects.
Prayer: Lord, may we imitate your example and take
your instructions, to wait on you so as to be empowered, to heart.
