Why do you Fast?

Today’s Scripture:  Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and people came and said to him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" 19 And Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20 The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day." Mark 2:18-20

Reflection: Fasting due to compulsions, rules and guidelines are common reasons why people fast. The coming of the Lenten season spurs many to fast.

There will always be people who fast on account of cosmetic reason. Some combine the two elements of rules and cosmetics into their fasting.

Now in Christ there is room for a third element, an element many a times looked down upon as emotional and based on passion; the element of love for the bridegroom whom they will loose soon and for whose sake they will fast.

The Lord looks for passionate people. These emotional outcasts too are welcome and shall do better as long as they remain faithful and don’t abandon their first love. (Rev. 2:4)

Prayer: Lord, fill my heart with a passionate desire to fast.
