Scripture: He
looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury; 2 and he saw a poor widow
put in two copper coins. 3 And he said, "Truly I
tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; 4 for they all contributed
out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all the living that
she had." Luke 21:1-4
Reflection: Mercy, compassion and love; if we get our
priorities wrong then we could be following a socialist or Marxist Gospel.
We know him as Christ and hence we may never look at this way; he is
encouraging the poor to contribute all their living. Ah! It sounds scandalous and doesn’t seem to
go along with what we know of Christ.
But
those who know God and what he is capable of and have God as their priority
then these things will never scandalize them. But those who go by human
priorities then this action of Jesus can stand condemned like his other
actions. Human Priorities over divine priorities
is fraught with eternal danger.
To
give is to communicate absolute trust in the divine and let no one test the faith
of the absolute giver. Though not every
form of giving is on account of faith in God but the giving of faith is the
supreme giving and it witnesses to the supreme giving of God in Christ Jesus.
(Jn. 3:16)
Prayer: Lord,
let me know you and thus seek to give as you have given us.
