Motives for fasting is important

Scripture: And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink." 34 And Jesus said to them, "Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days." Luke 5:33-35

Reflection:  Fasting for fasting sake! Perhaps, this is what they imply when they question Jesus about fasting.  We have people fast for various reasons, some for noble and some for ignoble reasons.

Do you fast?  If no then start doing it. If yes, then why are you doing it?

1) Some fast because fasting is there in the Bible and the teachings of the church recommends and the holy men and women did it.  These are noble reason, yet not the ultimate!

2) Then there are some who fast in memory of someone or for the sake of the poor and want to donate the savings for a cause- ignoble reason, sorry if this surprises you!

3) Compelled to fast because of circumstances

4) Then there are people who fast because they were told that it is good for health, releases body toxins and the system is fortified- Ignoble reason centered on self

>-->: The ultimate and the most noble reason Jesus encourages us in today’s gospel is the fast of getting closer to a missing bridegroom, Jesus Christ. Let your fast be aimed at seeking a closer relationship with Jesus and then you could adopt the other reason reasons as secondary or tertiary.

Prayer:  Lord you are my chosen portion and cup (Ps. 16:5)
