Today’s Gospel Text: For
God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him
should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God sent the Son into the
world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.
18 He who believes in him
is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has
not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment, that
the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light,
because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one who does evil
hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be
exposed. 21 But he who does what is true
comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been
wrought in God. John 3:16-21
Reflection: How
many will believe at least this: that we are prone to evil and tend to walk in
the dark rather than in the light.
It
is the very inclination of the human heart to tend to evil: “… the Lord said in his
heart, "I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the
imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; Gen 8:21
Thus
you offer the juicy temptations of sin with mention of sinful pleasures and evil
and the proposition becomes all the more attractive. Not necessary that one has to
perform sinful actions; for the sinful thoughts of a man is enough to betray
him.
The
hope is in the desire of everyone who acknowledges this tendency and turns to
the savior God, who in Christ Jesus came to save us from our sins.
The
worst would be when one hardens one's heart or justifies one's action, it is like as what Jesus says in
this Gospel passage:
And this is the
judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather
than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to
the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be
clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God.( vss. 19-21)
So often we come across
people who in spite of having the time would avoid the occasion to come into
God’s presence or light, through a Sunday worship or a prayer meeting or gathering.
Many a times there are plenty of reasonable excuses given; a excuse which would
have no tenability if it was pitted against a program which offered better opportunities
for the flesh.
Prayer: My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make
melody! Awake, my soul! Ps 108:1
